The South Eastern European country is home to 21.5 million people, of which one in ten lives in the capital Bucharest. Romania has been a member of the European Union since 2007. The Romanian landscape is dominated by the mountain ranges of the Carpathians, ten peaks of which reach heights of over 2,500 meters. The most important river in the country is the Danube, which flows for over a thousand kilometers through or along Romania before it flows via the Danube Delta into the Black Sea. Romania's flora and fauna are diverse, particularly in higher lying forest areas.
